Quick gameplay tutorial

Since the game pretty much just throws you into the street right at start, a few tips might help.

Basic movement

To explain it briefly, you move around with WASD (as default keys), look around with the mouse and jump with space — it probably sounds familiar. There's a bit more to it than that, like how you move faster in the direction you're looking and that Right Mouse Button makes you dash/dodge, and if you continue to hold it while moving you will run in that direction. Dashes and running combines with jumps as well.

Basic movement is demonstrated in this video:

Basic Combat

RMB is dodge and Left Mouse Button is attack. You attack in the direction you're facing.

There are quick attacks and strong attacks, and anything in-between. Holding LMB charges your attack, making it bigger and stronger. The green meter is the attack meter. The purple meter is the defence meter, but it's outdated/bugged so ignore that for now.

You can critically hit enemies, but it's not random chance: Hitting them in the weakpoint (for now = in the head) does critical damage. There is a powerup that allows you to see weakpoints while in focus stance.

Holding Shift (default) enables focus stance. This makes you move slower, charge attacks slower and have less reach, but it reduces damage taken from the front. Focus stance also changes RMB from dodge to block/parry (dodging does not give you invincibility frames by the way!). When you press RMB in focus stance you bring up your guard, the first split second reducing 100% damage, and less as long as it is held — in other words there is timing tied to blocking attacks, but it's better to be to early (might only reduce damage by 75%) than too late (take full damage). If you do take damage you need to be able to recover your health, so...

Health and Recovery

There are two components of player health/life: There's the health bar and the health blobs/hexagons. A bit simplified you could say that each healthblob is worth one healthbar.

Running out of healthblobs(1) means you're dead. And empty healthbar(2) means you lose one healthblob.

Whenever you take damage the healthbar will slowly tick up. And down! In the image above bright red is current health, dark red is how far health can regenerate — the gray area will not regenerate.

Aidkits (3) are used by holding Q (default button), but takes a little while to use. They heal one healthblob. Tapping Q uses a potion (4), which instantly adds to your healthbar (and can heal "gray" HP too!). Aidkits refill at savepoints while you have to buy potions.

Some tips: There are some degree of tactics to how you heal (but it doesn't really matter in this version). Second tip: You regenerate HP twice as fast in the focus stance, encouraging switching combat styles up.

Additionally

There are stats and exp in the game (enemies can drop exp and health pickups), but the enemies remains the same, so leveling up will quickly make you too strong. Besides, the stats aren't very balanced at the moment. My favourite build is probably pure crit, because it looks funny when you your attacks seems weak, but then suddenly a string of crits instantly kills an enemy. Use ESC to open the menu. When standing on a savepoint you can upgrade stats and buy potions.

You also have a "special" button: Hitting F enables slow motion (you still attack fast), which can be useful for hitting crits or just to look cool.

There are several powerups you can find throughout the level, so exploration in encouraged, even if there's no real level design to speak of — it's just a bunch of repeated assets scattered across the map.

Using the debug hotkeys to disable rain, reflections and moving time to daytime can help if there are any performance issues.

Have fun, thanks for reading this far and hopefully trying out this little proof of concept!
